Description
This watermill, located about one metre north of a granary south of the castle, dates from the early 19th century and incorporates part of an earlier building on the right. The structure appears to have been built in three phases, showcasing different types of stonework. It is constructed from slatestone rubble with granite dressings and quoins, topped with a hipped slate roof featuring ridge coping tiles. The rear wing has a gable end and a corrugated asbestos roof.
The overall layout is T-shaped, with a central rear wing housing the water wheel. The mill is built into a bank at the back, providing rear access to the loft above the main front range. A leet runs along the front left side of the building. The front facade features three doors at ground floor level and two loading doors above. The right side of the ground floor is made of random rubble with large granite quoins, while the upper level has smaller random rubble, showing a straight joint to the left where the building is in rubble with cut granite quoins. The left side includes a loading door at the upper level.
At the rear, granite steps lead to a door accessing the loft on the left side of the main range. The rear wing has a chamfered corner on the left and an opening leading to the wheel pit, along with an opening in the rear wall of the main building for the wheel housing. There is also a single-storey rubble lean-to set at an angle to the rear wing on the right, which includes a door at the back. The interior has not been inspected, so it is unknown whether any of the machinery remains.
