Description
A range of farm buildings, including a barn and horse engine house, probably dating to the late 18th century and early 19th century, with earlier materials incorporated, including a lintel dated 1678. The buildings are constructed of granite rubble with granite dressings and have slate roofs, some of which are slurried, with hipped ends. The overall layout forms an L-shape, with a front range and an engine house situated to the rear right.
The front range is in three distinct phases, with the central section likely the earliest. A range to the left was probably built around 1800, and the range to the right with the engine house is slightly later. The roof is of the 19th century. The central three-bay building has a tall, central, three-centred arched doorway which is now blocked, with further four-centred arched doorways on either side. Above, there are tall loading door openings on the upper level to the right and left, both with flat granite lintels, the one to the right being partially blocked.
The building to the left has long and short granite quoins at each end, built into the slope of the ground at the left end. Two doorways with granite lintels are present, one carved with a vestigial ogee and central roundel, dated 1678. Two loading doors are positioned above. The range to the right has two doorways and two loading doors, all with flat stone arches, with a tall, blocked opening with a timber lintel between them, and a window opening at ground floor. The end three bays to the right are slightly broken forward, featuring a central blocked door with a loading door above, and narrow blocked openings to either side with segmental heads. Blind loading doors flank these, also with segmental heads.
The right side has three wide segmental-headed openings with keystones, all now blocked with inserted doors and windows. A small, single-storey, 20th-century addition is located at the centre, with a door and window with granite lintels to the right. Above, there are three windows and a loading door with granite lintels. The rear of this range is a polygonal engine house with a doorway at the rear end, featuring a timber lintel and a pentice roof. A single-storey rubble lean-to is attached to the inner side of the engine house. The rear of the central range features a wide doorway at the upper level to the right, built into the slope of the ground. Part of the rear wall and end roof are missing.
The interior of the buildings has not been inspected.
