Description
Merlin Cottage is a house dating from around 1700, with some alterations made in the 20th century. It is constructed of slatestone rubble that has been rendered and painted, topped with an asbestos slate roof featuring gable ends and a gable end stack on the right, along with a rear lateral stack on the left.
The cottage has a two-room layout with a central passage. The room on the left is slightly larger and is heated by the rear lateral stack, while the room on the right is heated by the gable end stack. A straight staircase from the 19th century has been added to the left room. The entrance leads into the passage, and there is a lean-to structure, likely from the 18th century, added for service at the left end.
The building is two storeys high, with two small casement windows under the eaves and one window to the right and left of the doorway, all dating from the early 20th century. The passage features a half-glazed door and a narrow door to the left. The single-storey lean-to on the left end has a two-light casement window at the front and a slate roof. The right end includes an external stack and a single-storey addition from the 20th century. The rear of the cottage has a very large external weathered and stepped stack that heats the left room. There is no evidence of a door at the rear of the passage, and it appears that some rebuilding has occurred at the front, to the left of the passage door, where the wall is stepped forward.
Inside, the internal walls are battered. The left room features a rear fireplace with a plain 19th-century mantel, while the right room has two-panelled shutters at the window.
