Description

Higher Drift Cottage is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the 18th century. It is constructed from painted granite rubble with granite dressings and features an asbestos slate roof, except for the rear outshut on the left, which has a scantle slate roof. The cottage has a large rubble stack over the left gable end and a brick chimney over the right gable end.

The layout consists of a three-room plan with a pantry outshut at the rear on the left and a shippon outshut behind the right side. The large kitchen/living room is located on the left, with an entrance hall and staircase at the rear left, an unheated room, likely a pantry, at the rear right, and a parlour on the lower ground to the right.

The exterior features a low two-storey west front with first floor windows that rise above eaves level under a raking dormer. There is a 20th-century door and 20th-century four-pane horned sash windows. The original or 18th-century window and doorway openings are spanned by granite lintels. Inside, the simple interior includes three 18th-century two-panel doors on the ground floor and plank and muntin partitions in the middle room. The first floor and roof structure have not been inspected.
