Description

The coach house and stables located west of Trewidden House date back to 1848. Constructed from coursed dressed granite with granite dressings, the building features scantle slate roofs with gable ends and brick chimneys at either end of the west range. The layout is L-shaped, surrounding a paved stable yard, with two wings extending at right angles to the rear (north).

The west range includes two coach houses flanking a central entrance lobby, with grooms' accommodation above and likely an office in the far right corner. The north range features a porte-cochere entrance through the ground floor of the far left section. In the middle is a waggon shed, with a principal stable that has two windows on the left and probably tack rooms on the right. There is likely a granary on the first floor, accessible via a loading/winnowing doorway above the waggon house, which connects to Trewidden House on the right-hand side through a first-floor timber-framed corridor.

Architecturally, the building exhibits Tudor Gothic style features. The exterior stands two storeys high, with the east front of the west range displaying a nearly symmetrical three-bay coach house front. This includes a central doorway with a window above, a clock in the gable, and an octagonal bellcote over the ridge. The right side features a large four-centred arched doorway with original doors, while the left side has a widened doorway. Original two-light casements with glazing bars and four-centred traceried heads are present, along with a fanlight over the central doorway.

On the south front of the north range, there is an overall irregular three-window front. From the left, it includes the porte-cochere with a four-centred arched entrance and a window above, a symmetrical stable front with a window over the central doorway and additional windows on either side, and a central four-centred arched waggon doorway with a former loading/winnowing doorway (now a window) above. There is also a four-centred arched niche with a trough in front and two low doorways with windows above on the right. A half-timbered corridor bridge is located at the far right. The interior has been partly inspected and retains original fittings in the stables.
