Description
Treganhoe Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating primarily from the early to mid-19th century, although a service wing at the rear may be 18th century. The exterior is built of granite ashlar at the base, with the rest of the walls stuccoed except for the service wing, which is of coursed granite rubble with granite dressings. The roof is covered in scantle slate, with wide eaves over the stuccoed portions of the house. Brick chimneys are located on the side walls, over the front (party) wall of the rear wing and at the rear left-hand corner.
The house follows an irregular double-depth plan, likely containing two reception rooms at the front overlooking the garden, with an axial entrance hall behind the left-hand room. An older, lower service wing is situated at right angles to the entrance hall, and a stair hall and kitchen (with a cellar below) are within a shallower wing to the right. A lean-to porch and conservatory are behind this wing, and a single-storey wing adjoins the rear left-hand corner.
The symmetrical two-window garden front has a granite ashlar plinth and granite strings at the impost level of the ground floor arches and first-floor sill level. The elevation is stuccoed, with giant cinquefoil-headed panelled pilasters flanking the front. Ground floor window openings are recessed within round-headed blind arches, while first-floor openings are recessed within square-headed openings with aprons below the sills. The windows are original 16-pane hornless sashes, except for a 20th century window on the ground floor to the left. The entrance front, also similarly detailed (aside from the lower rubble-walled service wing on the left), has a doorway with an old ledged door and an original rectangular fanlight. There’s a late 19th or 20th-century four-pane sash window at first floor level in an original opening. The rear elevation retains an original tall 24-pane hornless sash stair window. The elevations are largely unspoiled.
A tall, slate-coped rubble garden wall runs along the front left-hand side of the house, returning at a lower level in a rounded shape. It includes an early 20th-century gateway with a wooden cross-braced and dowelled gate. The interior has not been inspected.
