Description

Polglase Farmhouse is a 18th-century farmhouse constructed from granite rubble with granite dressings, featuring corrugated asbestos roofs. The original house has a steep roof, which was formerly thatched, and includes rubble stacks over the gable ends. To the left, there is a lower pitched roof over a later 18th-century cottage, which has a brick chimney on its gable end. The building has cast-iron ogee gutters.

The overall plan is L-shaped. The original farmhouse, located on the right, has a double-depth layout with a wider kitchen on the left and a parlour on the right, separated by a cross passage that leads to a central rear stair hall with service rooms on either side. A large one-room plan cottage was added to the left side in the late 18th century or possibly early 19th century. In the 20th century, this cottage was connected by a small extension to a former outbuilding, dating from the 18th or early 19th century, to create a new kitchen. A large 20th-century conservatory is situated at the front.

The farmhouse is two storeys tall with an overall five-window south front. The original farmhouse section on the right has a nearly symmetrical three-window front with a doorway that is central to the fenestration, featuring a 20th-century door. The windows are 20th-century replicas of original 12-pane horizontal-sliding sashes. The cottage front has three original similar windows, and the large conservatory extends along the front.

Inside, there has been some remodelling in the 20th century, including the replacement of partitions and the first-floor structure. However, original fireplace structures, stairs, and roof structures remain. The original kitchen/living room fireplace features a large granite domed oven on the left-hand side. The dog-leg stairs have rectangular balusters, and the roof structure is close-spaced with lapped and pegged A trusses and battens between for thatch.
