Description

Merther Uny Farmhouse is a farmhouse that was formerly two houses, dating from the 18th century and incorporating some 17th century masonry, possibly from an earlier house on the same site. It is constructed of granite rubble with some granite dressings and has asbestos slate roofs that slope down at the rear. The chimneys are made of granite rubble and dressed granite, located over the gable ends and the cross party wall.

The building has a double depth plan with service rooms and stairs in a later rear outshut. Each of the former houses, now combined into one, originally had two front rooms with cross passages between them. It is difficult to determine which house is older, as both may be on older sites and have undergone successive rebuilding, with some walls possibly dating back to the 17th century.

The exterior features two storeys and an overall four-window front facing southeast. Each former house has a nearly symmetrical two-window front with an approximately central doorway, likely 18th century openings. The doors are from the 20th century, while the windows are late 19th or 20th century four-pane horned sashes. The right-hand house has first floor windows that are grouped closer together. The right-hand ground floor opening was originally larger and features a 17th century chamfered lintel and chamfered jamb on the right. The other ground floor opening of this house was also originally larger. The left-hand house has a 17th century chamfered lintel over the doorway.

Inside, apart from the large fireplaces, at least one domed granite oven, and some 18th century moulded ceiling beams, most of the carpentry and joinery is from the 19th or 20th century. The roof structure has not been inspected.
