Description

Harmony Cottage and two adjoining cottages, originally the Ship Inn, date back to around 1700 with further construction in the 18th century. The central cottage is built of stone rubble and cob, the middle of stone with stone footings and cob above, and the third of stone, all with a hipped wheat reed thatched roof. The central cottage has a 2-room plan with later additions, all double depth. The cottages present a 4-window range to the front. The ground floor has a window, a door, a window, a door, a window, a window and a door. Each cottage features a thatched porch supported by posts. Most windows are 2-light casements with glazing bars. The ground floor and first-floor right-hand windows of the middle cottage have outer frames and mullions that originally held leaded glazing (with shallow rebates). A similar window is located in the stair bay to the rear. The interior of the central cottage retains many original features, including 2-panel doors with HL hinges, an open hearth on the right, bowtell moulded ceiling joists, a dog leg staircase with flat balusters shaped like a spiral turning, and canopied ceilings on three sides of the first-floor rooms, indicating the cottage was originally hipped and stood alone. The interiors of the other two cottages have undergone more alteration, although some original joists remain.
