Description

SW 73 NW WENDRON

2/343 Storage chamber and 5 goose houses - immediately south of Mount Wise Farmhouse

II

Underground chamber, possibly for food storage, or possibly a failed mine, and 5 goose houses built into hedges on the land above. Chamber possibly C18 or earlier, goose houses probably circa early C19, the date of the remodelling of Mount Whistle Farmhouse. Chamber has granite rubble entrance with granite lintel over; goose houses are granite rubble and also have granite lintels. Plan: Chamber is long and irregular, for most of its length carved out of granite bedrock. There are 3 side tunnels now blocked with rubble. Goose houses are rectangular-on-plan niches slightly raised above ground level and built into rubble and earth walls (Cornish hedges). 2 pairs of goose houses on south side of lane and 1 house on the corner of the side of the lane. Goose houses are a rare building type and these are complete examples. The underground chamber is a mystery. Compare with example at Gregwartha Manor Farmhouse (qv) also in Wendron parish.
