Description

The storage chamber and five goose houses are located immediately south of Mount Wise Farmhouse in Wendron. The underground chamber, which may have been used for food storage or could possibly be a failed mine, dates from the 18th century or earlier. The goose houses are likely from the early 19th century, coinciding with the remodeling of Mount Wise Farmhouse.

The chamber features a granite rubble entrance with a granite lintel above. It is long and irregular in shape, primarily carved out of granite bedrock, and includes three side tunnels that are now blocked with rubble. The goose houses are rectangular niches that are slightly raised above ground level, built into the rubble and earth walls known as Cornish hedges. There are two pairs of goose houses on the south side of the lane and one house located at the corner of the lane.

These goose houses represent a rare building type and are complete examples. The purpose of the underground chamber remains unclear, but it can be compared to a similar structure at Gregwartha Manor Farmhouse, also in Wendron parish.
