Description
Medlyn Moor Mine engine house and balance-bob setting, located to the southeast, dates from around 1873. It is constructed of granite rubble with granite dressings, featuring timber lintels and round brick arches at the front and rear doorways. A rubble chimney with an echinus moulded cornice leads to a brick collar and upper stage. The engine house has a rectangular plan, with a thicker bob wall and an external round-on-plan chimney attached to the right side of the rear wall. In front of the engine house are two parallel walls that form the balance-bob setting, which is included in the listing. The shaft retains its 19th-century round rubble enclosing wall, but the machinery, floors, and roof of the engine house have been removed. The exterior consists of three storeys above a basement plinth, with a central round-headed doorway to the bob wall and a similar doorway at the rear gable, while the other openings are square-headed. Historically, Medlyn Moor Mine was an important stream ground developed underground starting in 1846, initially using a waterwheel to sink a shaft 10 fathoms deep. The mine produced 15 tons of tin but faced challenges with water, leading to the installation of a 30-inch steam engine in 1846, which operated until the mine closed in 1854. It reopened in 1873 with the construction of the current engine house for a 40-inch engine, before finally closing in 1879.
