Description
The Goose House, located at SW74553253, is a structure that may have served as an ash-house, a dog's kennel, or a larder. It likely dates from the 18th century or early 19th century and is constructed from granite rubble with some partly dressed granite. The building has a quadrant-shaped chamber, which appears to have been reduced from a semi-circular shape and later infilled on the left side. It is approximately 1 metre deep and has a roof made of granite lintels.
The east-facing doorway is small and narrow, featuring holes for two pintail hinges in the right-hand jambstone and a single hole for fastening a door in the left-hand jambstone, although the door itself is missing. This Goose House is one of two similar structures located in front of a house that is said to have been used as a buttery. It is possible that these chambers were intended for butter storage.
