Description

Helland Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 18th century, with a datestone of 1708 that has been reset. The building features a coursed dressed granite front, with a granite ashlar plinth and lintel courses. It has an asbestos slate hipped roof and brick chimneys located over the side walls, along with an external gable end stack at the rear of the kitchen wing. The overall layout is rectangular, built around a rectangular courtyard. The front section is a two-room-plan house from the early 19th century, while the kitchen wing, which is at right angles behind the left-hand room, dates from the 18th century or possibly earlier. There is a central stair hall projection at the rear, which has been later extended, and a covered walk that is open on its left-hand side, adjoining the front right-hand side of a small 18th-century house that runs parallel at the rear. The two-room-plan house was raised in height during the 19th century and extended with a small barn on the right, which features a flight of stone steps leading up to its loft at the front.

The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-window west front and a central doorway. The door is from the 20th century, as is the classical-style granite porch with two columns. The original windows are 12-pane hornless sashes. On the right-hand wall of the kitchen wing, there is a stone carved in relief inscribed with "OTAT 1708," which has been reset. This wall also contains several reused 17th-century chamfered fragments, suggesting it may be part of the 18th-century front. The interior has some 19th-century features, but no 18th-century elements are visible.
