Description

Trewoon Farm Cottages consists of two adjoining farmhouses, one of which is possibly a 17th century building that was remodeled in the 18th century, while the other farmhouse dates from the 18th century. The cottages are constructed of granite rubble with granite dressings and feature slurried scantle slate roofs. At the time of the survey, most of the roof slates on the 18th century range were missing. The 17th century range has crested clay ridge tiles, and there are large brick chimneys: one over the left-hand end of the 17th century range and a slender one over the opposite end. The chimney on the front gable end of the 18th century range has been removed, and dressed granite copings are present where the roof slopes lower over an integral outshut.

The plan is L-shaped. The original two-room-plan house was extended in the 18th century at right angles in front of the right-hand side, creating a double-depth house that blocked the right side of the original house. During this time, the window and doorway openings were altered. It is possible that the rear of the house was originally the front, but 19th century lean-tos added in the 20th century obscure any evidence for this. The 18th century house features two front rooms on the left and two shallow service rooms, with an entrance hall and stair between, now combined into one room. There is an oven located in the front gable end.

The exterior is two storeys high, with a two-window south front that has the left-hand return wall of the 18th century house adjoining the doorway. The doorway features a 19th century five-panel door with later glazed top panels, and there are 20th century windows in what are likely original 18th century openings. The 18th century house has a symmetrical two-window west front with a central doorway, which features a 19th century four-panel door and 20th century windows, all within original openings spanned by granite lintels. The interior has not been inspected.
