Description
The Treverva Methodist Church, together with its associated ramp, gate piers, gates, walls, and railings along the road frontage, dates to 1889. It is constructed of slightly rock-faced dressed granite, brought to course, with granite brick and freestone dressings. The roof is of dry Delabole slate, coated in bitumen, with gable ends. A chimney serves a later organ loft at the rear of the building. The chapel has a rectangular, aisle-less plan, with a schoolroom situated on the ground floor. The ritual east end is located at the south-west end of the chapel, while a large window is positioned at the front. An entrance porch, centrally located on the left-hand wall, is accessible via a ramp leading from a gateway at the road front. A canted organ loft was added later, in the 19th or 20th century. The chapel is designed in a Gothic style.
The exterior is largely unaltered, retaining original doors and windows in their original openings. The north-east front has a symmetrical three-bay design, with the central bay projecting forward. Brick string courses are present, along with three courses of moulded granite kneeler stones to the gables. The central bay features a large, five-light, pointed-arched freestone window with five lancets, a cinquefoil rose piercing a tympanum, and coloured leaded lights, set within a blind arcade of pointed arches. The window’s hoodmould is of polychrome brick and moulded freestone, topped by decorated terra cotta panels and a freestone finial. Ground floor windows, and those on other elevations, have brick dressings and shallow arches over the openings. Single-light windows in the flanking bays have granite lintels with relieving arches. The south-east front, which houses the entrance, features a central, two-storey, gable-ended porch with a four-panel door giving access to the chapel on the first floor. A ramp provides access to the doorway on the right. To the right of the gateway, a low wall is surmounted by railings; to the left, a higher coped wall includes a stepped granite stile. Original wrought-iron gates and railings, with scrolled decoration, are also present. The interior, which has not been inspected, retains original features and fittings.
