Description
Carne Cottage is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It is constructed from roughly coursed granite moorstone with moorstone dressings and features a steep roof. Although the roof covering was removed at the time of the survey, it is expected to have concrete simulated slates. The building has granite ashlar stacks over coped gable ends with moulded kneelers.
The layout consists of a two-room plan, with a larger hall/kitchen on the right and a parlour on the left, originally separated by a cross passage and stair. There are 19th and 20th-century lean-tos at the rear.
The exterior is two storeys high with a nearly symmetrical three-window south front, featuring a doorway that is central to the windows. The door and windows are from the 20th century but are set in original or 19th-century remodelled openings.
Inside, the cottage retains original fireplaces, including a large kitchen fireplace with a roughly chamfered lintel and a domed granite oven. The floor structure dates from the 19th century, and there are some A-frame trusses from the 18th or 19th century.
