Description
19 and 19A Pydar Street is a town house that has been converted into a shop, dating from the early 19th century. The building features incised stucco on masonry at the ground floor, with studwork above, and has an asbestos slate roof with two hipped dormers set behind a parapet. It has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys tall, plus an attic, with an overall four-window range.
The façade includes a plinth, giant fluted pilasters, a string course, and a moulded cornice at the parapet. The right-hand section has a symmetrical three-window front, featuring a round-arched doorway with pilasters, an open pediment, panelled reveals, and a plain fanlight above a six-panel door. This doorway is flanked by shallow segmental arches with keyblocks over original 16-pane hornless sash windows. The first floor has similar sashes in square-headed openings with wooden architraves and keyblocks. On the left side, there is a larger 20-pane sash window above a 20th-century shop front with glazing bars.
Inside, some partitions have been removed, but the building retains many panelled doors and plaster ceiling cornices and bands.
