Description
Rose Cottage is a small house dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century. It features painted cob walls resting on stone rubble footings, slate sills, and wooden lintels. The roof is thatched with wheat reed and has corrugated iron eyebrows over the first-floor windows, with a brick chimney on the hipped end to the left and another on the gable end to the right.
The layout includes a parlour on the left and a hall/kitchen on the right, with a staircase and a shallow service room behind it under an integral outshut. The house is two storeys high and has an irregular two-window east front. The central doorway has a four-panel door that has been later top-glazed, and there is a 20th-century open porch. The windows are late 18th-century horizontal sliding sashes with six panes per light. Notably, the left-hand ground floor window has been turned 90 degrees to become a vertical hung sash. The first-floor windows are spaced closer together, and to the right of the first-floor right-hand window is a plastered niche, which appears to have a seat beside the first-floor fireplace.
Inside, there are two wide chamfered and stopped beams, along with a moulded pine post and panel partition to the left of the doorway, both possibly dating from the late 17th century. Other beams in the house are later additions. The first floor and roof structure have not been inspected. This house has remained virtually unaltered since the 18th century, making it a rare survival.
