Description

The Forge is a house dating from the late 17th century, with eaves heightened in the late 19th or early 20th century and a 20th-century extension added at the rear. It is constructed of painted cob with rubble footings, featuring slate sills and wooden lintels. The roof is made of scantle slate and has brick chimneys at the gable ends. Originally, the layout included two rooms: a hall on the left with a rear lateral fireplace and a parlour on the right with a large fireplace, which may have been added in the 19th century for use as a forge. The house is two storeys high and has an irregular two-window east front. There is a doorway to the right of the middle, featuring a four-panel door and an old wooden gabled porch. The ground floor has 19th-century 16-pane hornless sash windows, with the right-hand window next to the doorway and porch. The first floor has later 4-pane sashes in the original small openings, with the right-hand window slightly to the right of the porch ridge and the left-hand window further left than the ground floor window. The interior is simple and has seen little alteration since the 19th century, except for the removal of ground floor partitions. The Forge is part of a group of 17th to 19th-century buildings that are arranged irregularly around a village square, which is an unusual settlement pattern in Cornwall.
