Description

COLAN SW 86 SE 6/2 Range of barns about 50 metres - south east of Lowertown Farmhouse II

Range of barns. Mid - late C19 with few later alterations. Slatestone and elvan rubble. Slate roofs with ridge tiles and gable ends ; gable end stacks with brick shafts. Plan: Large asymmetrical barn in 3 ranges, two to left and one to right, with an enclosed area between. The gable ends face the front, forming three parallel buildings. The 2 to right are enclosed at the rear by a screen wall. Gothic style. Exterior: The tallest barn is to left, slightly advanced, with the gable end to front; this has an upper loading door with cranked head, set in a pointed arched opening; brick stack above. Wider lower gabled barn to right with pointed arched 2- light casement at ground floor and 2-centred arched loading door with keystone above. Stable door at the right side. There is a C20 gabled roof over the open bay to right. This end barn to right has a depressed 2-centred arched double doorway with ventilation slit to right and left, and a loading door above with 2-centred arched head. Gable end stack above. At the right side there is a 2-light window with shutters and cranked head, and single door. At the left side there are three doorways at ground floor, the central one wider with a 4-centred stone arch. Three small loading doors above with shutters. At the rear, there is a screen wall enclosing two barns, with a gable end to right. In the screen wall are 3 loading doors at upper level, with triangular heads, the central one with blocked pointed arched ventilation slit to right and left and a small gable over. There is a straight joint to the gable end to right, with concrete external stair leading to a similar loading door and 2-light window with cranked head and shutters. Interior: Not inspected.
