Description
Melancoose Mill is a late 19th-century mill, dated 1899, with later alterations. It is constructed of slatestone and elvan rubble with granite dressings, quoins, and a plinth. The roof is hipped and covered with slate, featuring ridge tiles and gable ends. The original mill range has a waterwheel on its right side, powered by a leat that runs from the rear of the mill. An addition was likely made in the early 20th century to the front right.
The main range is two storeys high. A round-arched granite doorway, with imposts, keystone, pilasters, and a cornice, is positioned on the left side. To the right of the doorway is a cambered arched window with a dressed stone head, and two matching windows above. The projecting front wing has an upper loading door in the gable and double doors to the side, clad in corrugated iron. The left end of the mill features a granite segmental-arched window at both ground and first floor levels, incorporating the 1899 datestone as a keystone to the upper window. The right end has two two-light casements at the upper ground level, partly slate-hung, and an overshot cast iron waterwheel. The waterwheel's launder is supported by stone piers with brick sides to the water channel. A straight joint marks the division between the main range and the front wing, which has two loading doors with shutters under the eaves. The rear of the mill has double doors and a window to the left, with a window at first floor level. The upper level to the left features two loft openings. The interior has not been inspected.
