ST COLUMB MAJOR Nanswhyden Farmhouse with wall about 50 metres to south east

Farmhouse. Late C18 - early C19, with few later alterations. Slatestone and granite rubble. Some brick and granite ashlar. 2-span hipped slate roof with ridge tiles. Axial stacks with coupled brick shafts and an arch between the shafts. Plan: Double depth plan; central entrance with 2 front rooms to left and 3 to right; small single storey wing to front right in granite ashlar with a canted front. Service rooms to rear. Exterior: 2 storeys, asymmetrical 5-window front. Ground floor has plank door with overlight. C19 16-pane sash to left, and C20 window, formerly door, to end left. Two C19 12-pane sashes and one 16-pane sash to right. All ground floor windows have brick segmental arches. First floor has two 16-pane sashes and three 12-pane sashes, of C19. To end right is the single storey wing, with round-arched light with glazing bars to front, 8-pane sidelights, hipped roof behind parapet. The right end is in rusticated granite ashlar, with an arcade of three round arches with imposts and voussoirs, the two to right with 4-pane sashes. Band course and tall parapet with. three blank panels and moulded coping. About 50 metres to south east is the remaining wall of a former building which faces the right end of the farmhouse; this wall also has an arcade of 3 round arches with imposts and keystones, tall parapet with three blank panels and moulded coping, also in rusticated granite ashlar. The left end has 4-pane sash at first floor to left and right. The rear is in painted rubble, with an arcade of 9 recessed round arches through ground and first floors. 3 of the arches retain 2-light 4-pane casements with segmental arches at first floor, other openings blocked. Ground floor has 12-pane sash with sidelights and three 12- pane sashes remaining, other openings blocked or blind. Interior: Not accessible.
