Western Farmhouse, Including Front Garden Walls, Gate-Piers And Gate

Western Farmhouse, together with its front garden walls, gate piers, and gate, is a C17 farmhouse that was remodelled and extended, likely around the early 19th century. The construction is of granite rubble with granite dressings, and the roof is covered in scantle slate with gable ends. The original C17 chimney is of dressed granite with a simple entablature located at the left-hand end, while a C20 chimney sits over the right-hand end. The building has cast iron gutters with an ogee section. The layout follows an L-shape, with a two-room-plan C17 house at the front, featuring a cross passage or lobby entrance between the rooms. A deep wing was added behind the right-hand side in two phases, around the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and incorporates a small barn. The south-east front has a nearly symmetrical appearance with three windows and a centrally placed doorway. A C17 window remains at ground floor level on the left, featuring chamfered jambs and head, with a sill for the central mullion. A reused chamfered lintel is above the doorway. The eaves were raised, probably around the early 19th century, and the other openings likely date to this period. A C20 door and 20-pane horned sash windows are present. There is an old granite earth closet located near the back doorway in the left-hand wall of the rear wing. The interior remains uninspected. The farmhouse is part of a largely unspoiled hamlet, containing a collection of farmhouses and farm buildings set within a rural landscape.
