Description
Pengelly Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse that was remodelled and extended around the early 19th century. It features granite rubble walls with dressed granite quoins, jambstones, and lintels. The roof is made of scantle slate and has a granite coped gable end with ovolo moulded kneelers. There is a large granite chimney on the left gable, a rendered chimney on the right gable, and a brick chimney serving an outshut at the back, which has reused copings behind it.
Originally, the farmhouse had a two-room plan with a through passage between the hall/kitchen on the left and a smaller parlour on the right. In the 19th century, the eaves were raised, and a single-storey outshut was added at the rear, likely serving as a pantry on the left and a back kitchen on the right. The building is two storeys high and has a nearly symmetrical three-window front. The doorway and a window are slightly right of the centre, featuring a 20th-century door and a lean-to conservatory/porch. The windows are 4-pane horned sashes in openings that were remodelled in the 19th century. Notably, the ground floor right-hand window opening retains a 17th-century chawmred jambstone with a chamfered two-light mullioned window head within the opening.
This farmhouse is a rare example of a small 17th-century house in the area, and the surviving features from that period suggest that it was well detailed despite its size.
