Description

Higher Prospidnick Farmhouse is a small farmhouse dating from the 18th century, with an extension built around the early 19th century. It is constructed of painted granite rubble and cob walls, with slate sills. The original part of the roof is corrugated iron, previously thatched, and has a steep pitch. The extension to the right has a slurried scantle slate roof with a shallower pitch. Brick chimneys are located on the gable ends. Originally, the farmhouse had a single room with a fireplace on the left-hand gable and an entrance vestibule and staircase on the right. Around the early 19th century, it was extended on the right-hand side with a further single-room addition, incorporating a gable-end fireplace for heating. Later 19th-century lean-tos were added to the rear. The two-storey south front is irregular, with three window bays, and the eaves level steps down on the right. The original two-window front, situated on higher ground to the left, features a doorway on the right-hand side. A circa early 20th-century top-glazed door is set within a 20th-century lean-to porch. The window openings are irregularly placed, and the first-floor window second from the left (in the middle of the whole front) is a 19th-century 6-pane 3-light horizontal sliding sash window; the left-hand light slides. The remaining windows are circa late 19th or 20th century 4-pane horned sash windows, all within their original openings. The one-window front addition to the right has openings set at a lower level than the original part. The interior has not been inspected. The farmhouse represents a rare 18th-century single-room plan dwelling with a modest 19th-century extension, and it has remained largely unaltered since that time.
