Description

Top Cottage is a small farmhouse or farmworker’s house dating from around the early 19th century. It is constructed of granite rubble with granite dressings, and has a scantle slate roof covered in grout, featuring brick chimneys on the gable ends. One chimney is situated over a large, outwardly projecting chimney breast. The house originally comprised two rooms, a parlour on the left and a kitchen on the right, with a lobby and staircase situated between them. A lean-to addition was later added to the right side. The exterior of the building retains its original appearance and openings. The west-facing front has a symmetrical design with two window bays and a central doorway. The doorway has a 20th-century ledged door, and there are four-pane, horned sash windows, dating from around the late 19th century. Top Cottage forms part of an unspoiled hamlet containing a selection of farmhouses and farm buildings all set within a rural landscape.
