Description

Corfingle and Corfingle Cottage are two fishermen's cottages, likely built in the early 19th century. They are constructed from slatestone rubble and feature mostly scantle slate roofs with brick chimneys at the gable ends. Each cottage has a two-room, double-depth layout with a central stair plan, built into the hillside. They are two storeys high and have a two-room basement for each cottage, with separate access, resulting in four doorways on the south side. Each cottage has a central entrance on the two-storey north side, facing the street, and two window fronts. Most windows are 12-pane sashes, and there are cambered brick arches over the basement and ground floor, with timber lintels above the first-floor windows. The cottages are stepped up the hillside, with the higher cottage featuring a larger stair window. A glazed 20th-century door, accessed by external 20th-century steps, replaces a window at the rear of the lower cottage. The interior of Corfingle remains unaltered, showcasing the original stair, doors, open beamed ceilings, and very narrow rooms on the north side. The interior of Corfingle Cottage has not been inspected. These cottages are included for their group value.
