Description
The cottages at Rhydfelin are a pair of 18th-century buildings, originally constructed as a single long range along the roadside. They are built of whitewashed rubble stone with a corrugated sheet roof, featuring timber boarded doors and four-light casement windows with timber lintels and rough stone cills. Each cottage has a central door flanked by small windows. A lean-to extension with a matching window and corrugated roof has been added to the left side.
The cottages were initially separated by a central party wall, but are now linked by a connecting doorway. The left-hand cottage has a crogloft to the left of the door, with a further floor inserted to the right. Later alterations include a modern stair directly in front of the door and modern partitioning beneath the crogloft. The roof structure comprises three trusses with tie beams and purlins of halved rough timbers. A wattle firehood against the party wall rests on a rough timber cross beam. The right-hand cottage also features a later crogloft to the left, with partitioning and a further floor inserted, constructed of traditional wide adzed softwood planks. The roof structure here is similar to that of the left-hand cottage.
