Description
Carlyon Farmhouse and the adjoining barn were built around the early to mid 17th century. The farmhouse features rendered stone rubble and cob construction, topped with a scantle and rag slate roof that has gable ends and brick stacks. It has a two-storey layout with a central entrance and a parallel two-room plan, which was expanded with a rear range in the 19th century to create a double depth plan. The front has a regular three-window arrangement with 20th-century PVC windows set in original sash openings. The ground floor includes a 20th-century part-glazed door in a central porch made of stone rubble, which has a rag slate roof, flanked by two windows with three above.
The rear elevation has been partly remodeled in the 20th century. Attached to the right gable end of the farmhouse is a barn, which dates from the late 18th or early 19th century. This barn is constructed of stone rubble and has a rag slate roof, featuring a gable end on the left and a hipped end on the right, with a hipped projection for the horse engine house on the front left. The barn has a rectangular plan and a single-storey elevation with plank doors. The interior of the farmhouse and barn is not accessible. Carlyon is depicted in a painted panel from around 1690 at Trevelver.
