Description
The retaining wall of the churchyard is located to the north and west of the Church of St. Michael's in Porthilly. It dates from around the mid-19th century and is constructed from vertically coursed slate stones, with intermediate piers made of horizontally coursed slate stone. The wall measures approximately 47 metres in length and serves as a retaining structure for the churchyard of St. Michael's Church, situated on the south wall of Porthilly Cove along the east bank of the Camel estuary.
A flight of stone rubble steps leads from the cove up to the churchyard, featuring some reset dressed stone. It is believed that the wall was planned by a vicar of St. Michael's when a small piece of land was reclaimed from the estuary.
