Description

The Rock Sailing Club House is a warehouse, dating to the early 19th century, that was converted into a sailing club house in 1976. It is located on the east bank of the Camel Estuary, on the Quay. The building is constructed of stone rubble, with parts of the north front slate-hung. It has a renewed scantle slate roof with half-hipped ends. Originally built for storing coal on the ground floor, grain on the first floor, and animal feed at the top, the building features a rectangular plan with altered interior partitions. A mill wheel was formerly located on the first floor, but has since been removed. The south elevation faces across the estuary and has an asymmetrical three-window front. The windows are largely 20th century replacements in earlier openings, featuring brick segmental arches. There are 20th-century roof lights to the attic. The north elevation is slate-hung and also has 20th-century windows. The interior has been altered. The clubhouse occupies a prominent location within the picturesque Camel Estuary and is one of the few surviving industrial buildings in Rock.
