Description

Porthilly Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th or early 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The original stone rubble construction is partly covered with cement, with a slate roof to the main range and a lower slate roof over the service range. A rear wing was added in the early 20th century.

The original plan may have been of three rooms with a through passage, the higher end being to the left, and incorporating a service wing on the south east. A central axial stack heated the hall, which it shares with the adjacent inner room. In the early 19th century, the service wing was partly demolished, and further demolition occurred in the mid-20th century. The remains of the front service wing's lower west wall now form part of a store. A wing was added to the rear of the inner room and higher side of the hall in the early 20th century.

The south front is regular, with three windows. The ground floor has a 12-pane sash window and an early 19th century 16-pane hornless sash, both set within dressed stone segmental arches. The first floor has three 16-pane sashes, two of which are without horns. To the right of the main range are the remains of the ground floor of the service range, with the first floor partly rebuilt.

The rear elevation features a granite segmental arch with chamfered jambs and straight cut stops, marking the former entrance to the through passage. A reset 17th-century jamb is within a porch to the rear. The rear wing has brick dressings and sash windows.

Inside, the through passage has been retained, though the partition on the higher side was removed. The hall has a plastered ceiling and a blocked fireplace. The inner room contains a 20th-century grate. A 18th-century two-panel door is located on the first floor. The roof structure is not accessible, but projecting feet of principals are visible. Within the store, there are several probably reset chamfered ceiling beams with straight cut stops, likely belonging to the remains of the original service range.
