Description
Jesus Well is a wellhouse associated with a Holy Well, possibly rebuilt in the late 19th century and restored in the 20th century. It is constructed of stone rubble and features a corbelled stone rubble roof with gable ends, following a rectangular plan. The entrance is located in the gable end and has a 4-centred arch with a chamfered granite head that may have been reused.
Inside, there is an inscribed slate stone in the threshold that reads: "JESUS WELL JESUS SAITH UNTO HER GIVE ME TO DRINK Timor Domini Fons Vitae." M.L. Quiller Couch, in his work "Ancient and Holy Wells of Cornwall," described the well before its restoration, noting that it stands on a bleak high down in the lowlands of St. Minver, where water would be unexpected. He mentioned that it is partially buried in drifting sea sand and described the building as square with a highly pitched but truncated masonry roof. He also noted a niche of crude shape at the far end of the well, which may have been intended to hold a drinking vessel, crucifix, or effigy of a saint.
