Description

This Methodist chapel, along with its attached Sunday school at the rear and forecourt walls, was built in 1872. It is constructed of local slate stone rubble with polychrome dressings, with a rendered left-hand side elevation, and has a rag slate roof with a projecting front verge supported by slender paired brackets. The building has a rectangular, aisle-less plan with a ritual east end at the rear.

The symmetrical front elevation has a two-window design, featuring round-arched openings. Original windows have wide margin panes and spoked fanlights. The gable end is dominated by a large, round-arched recessed panel containing a patterned oculus above a wide doorway with a traceried fanlight over a pair of four-panel doors and narrow glazed sidelights. The side elevations feature windows similar to those at the front, which are horned sashes with high meeting rails and coloured glass.

Inside, the chapel has a simple interior with good ceiling roses. Original box pews with square-headed ends and lower doors remain, stepped up towards the entrance. A crescent-curved front faces the rostrum.

The forecourt features tapered, round-ended rubble walls with a rubble coping, and square red brick gate piers with dressed granite courses, one for the hinge and one for the latch. This complete chapel, notable for its unusual design and use of materials shared with St Tudy, also retains a rare, late-type box pew arrangement.
