Description

Treglines Farmhouse, likely dating back to the 17th century, was expanded in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The house is constructed of stone rubble and cob, with some rendered areas. It has a complex roof structure, incorporating bitumen-coated rag and scantle slate coverings, with gable ends on the west range and hipped ends on the north and south ranges. A brick stack is located in the gable end of the north range, and further east an extension has a lower hipped slate roof. The original layout is uncertain due to alterations but the west range likely originated in the 17th century, featuring a two-room plan and a cross or through passage, originally heated by end stacks. A contemporary south range may have formed a single-room wing to the rear of the west range. In the mid-18th century, a north range was added, creating a heated single-room plan to the rear of the west range. A final extension, the east range, was built in the late 18th or early 19th century, comprising a two-room plan with a through passage. The north room of this range (on the right) has an axial stack adjoining the earlier gable end stack of the north wing. Around the same time, the interior was extensively remodeled, and the house was reoriented with a front door on the east side leading to a cross passage. This passage provides access to rooms in the north west and south ranges, as well as to a staircase inserted on the north east side. A second entrance is located in the south range, joining the passage at a right angle. The two-story east front has a symmetrical three-window facade with early 19th-century two-light casement windows. A 19th-century rendered gabled porch shelters the central entrance, with a 19th-century door. A centrally positioned first-floor window has been blocked and replaced with a circa 15th-century catacleuse stone window. The west elevation has been refenestrated in the late 20th century, and the roof was raised in the late 19th century. A 19th-century entrance door with margin glazing bars is on the north side. The south elevation shows numerous straight joints, and a stair window features intersecting glazing bars. Inside, a mid to late 18th-century chimney-piece in the north range is decorated with carved vine leaves, sheaves of corn, acanthus leaf capitals, and a pastoral scene. An 1840s chimney-piece and dado rail are found within the south room of the west range. The staircase on the southwest is from circa late 18th or early 19th century, exhibiting turned balusters, a ramped rail, a closed string, and a dado rail on the opposite wall. A coved plaster ceiling is present in a bedroom of the north wing. The roof structure within the west range and south wing dates to circa 18th century, exhibiting several reused chamfered principals and collars.
