Description

This is a terrace of eleven small town houses, dating from the 1830s and built for Josephus Ferris, a local developer. The houses are constructed with stucco over rubble walls, and have brick end stacks, except between numbers 4 and 5. Original scantle slate roofs are still present on numbers 5, 6, 8, and 10; the others have been replaced with asbestos slate. Wide eaves project from the front of the building.

The houses are arranged with a double-depth plan; each generally includes an entrance hall on the left and a reception room on the right. Number 3, the corner house, has a bowed front section and incorporates two reception rooms flanking an entrance hall. All have shallow courtyards in front, with basement steps leading down to them. The houses are two storeys high over basements. Most have a two-window front with rusticated round-headed doorways and widely spaced eaves brackets. Number 3 has a three-window front with a bowed bay on the right. Panelled pilasters are present at the ends of numbers 3 and 4. Original 16-pane hornless sash windows remain in numbers 1, 3, 5, and 10; the others have later sash windows.

The interiors, which were not inspected, are noted to include panelled doors and shutters, carved cornices, and dogleg staircases.

In front of the houses are wide bridges spanning the basement courtyards. Simple iron railings, with closer spacing at the bottom, run along the front of numbers 2 to 5, while numbers 7 and 8 have closer-spaced railings topped with fleur-de-lis finials.
