Description
The Academy is a house, likely once used as a shop, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of granite rubble with granite dressings and features an asbestos slate roof with projecting eaves, a gable end on the left, and a hipped end on the right. There is a brick chimney located over the rear wall towards the right and cast-iron ogee-section gutters. The building likely has a shallow double depth plan with two rooms at the front flanking an entrance hall that leads to a stair hall between the rear rooms. The rear right-hand room has a large window opening in its right-hand wall, probably intended for a former shop window.
The exterior is two storeys high with a nearly asymmetrical three-window front facing northeast. The doorway is slightly right of the middle and is partly blocked on the left. It features a late 19th-century four-panel door with an overlight, and late 19th-century or 20th-century twelve-pane horned sash windows. The right-hand end has two original twelve-pane hornless sashes on the first floor. The interior has not been inspected.
