Description

The Ough monument is a headstone located in the churchyard about 5 metres south of the tower of the Church of St Meubred in Cardinham. It dates from the 18th century and is made of slate. The headstone features a 4-centred arched top with an incised border and a cherub's head with wings at the top. It bears long admonitory verses that describe how John Ough was "killed by the sudden falling in of a Gravel Pit." The stone also includes an incised heart and good lettering, commemorating John Ough, who was 37 years old at the time of his death in 1775.
