Description
The Chubb monument is a headstone located in the churchyard about 3 metres north of the tower of the Church of St. Mary and St. Julian. It dates from the 18th century and is made of slate. The headstone features a segmental top with rounded shoulders and a lined border. It includes verses that describe the death of John Chubb, who was 3 years and 9 months old when he died after swallowing a stone: "Harsh were the cries and every piercing groan/ Caus'd by the racking Torment of the Stone...". There is also a pebble carved in the slate, matching the size of the stone the child swallowed. Additionally, the monument has inscriptions commemorating two other infant deaths in the same family. John Chubb passed away in 1790.
