SX 45 SW MAKER-WITH-RAME

6/46 Chubb monument in the churchyard about 3 metres north of tower of Church of St. Mary and St. Julian GV II

Headstone. C18. Slate. Segmental head with rounded shoulders, lined border. Verses describing how John Chubb, aged 3 years and 9 months, died after swallowing a stone: "Harsh were the cries and every piercing groan/ Caus'd by the racking Torment of the Stone...", with a pebble carved in the slate the same size as the one the child swallowed. Inscriptions to two other infant deaths in the same family. John Chubb died 1790.
