Description
St Julian's Well is a chapel built over a holy well, dating from the 14th or 15th century and restored around 1890. It is constructed from roughly coursed granite and sandstone rubble, featuring a corbelled stone roof with gable ends. The doorway jambs, rib, corbels of the roof, and niches are made from green freestone sourced from the parish of Landrake. The original pavement was made of red and green glazed tiles. The chapel has a single cell plan, measuring approximately 3 metres by 2 metres, with an entrance on the west side and a well or bath sunk into the floor at the east end. The single-storey structure has a steeply pitched roof that extends to form projecting eaves. The west doorway features a steeply pointed arch with three roll mouldings, and the jambs still have pintles from the original door. The chapel is built into the slope of the ground on the east side, with no other external openings. Inside, there is a stone vaulted roof supported by a single stop-chamfered rib that springs from moulded corbels on either side. The east wall contains a lancet-shaped niche with an ogee head, while the south wall features an ogee-headed aumbry. There is also a water sink located to the east. This site is designated as an ancient monument and is part of Mount Edgcumbe Country Park.
