Description
The White Seat, also known as Harbour View Seat, is an 18th-century seat located in Edgcumbe Country Park. It is constructed from sandstone rubble with a rendered rear wall. The structure is rectangular with an open front facing north, providing a view over Plymouth Sound. It may have originally had a roof. The rear and side walls feature a plaster moulded cornice, and the rear wall is rendered. Two granite steps lead up to the platform, which has sockets along the top step, suggesting it may have once had rails to piers along the front. The seat is approximately 5 metres wide. Rev. Shaw, in his 1788 work "Early Tours of Devon and Cornwall," described it as "the White alcove on the drywalks," noting its beautiful perspective up the harbour. It is possible that the White Seat was originally painted white.
