Description
Barrow Park Flats is a stable block, originally part of Edgcumbe House, now converted into 5 flats. It was likely built in the late 18th century, with alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed from sandstone rubble with sandstone dressings and quoins, and has hipped slate roofs. It has a U-plan arrangement, comprising a main range of stabling and carriage houses, with a small single-storey coach house situated about 5 metres to the east. The building has two storeys, with a basement on the outer side.
The central range features carriage doors on the left, replaced by 20th-century multi-pane casements on the right. A central elliptical arch doorway with a single light on each side provides access. There are seven windows at the first floor, with the majority being 2-light casements, except for a single light on the left and right of centre, with one blocked. The wing to the left has, on its inner side, two stable doors with plank doors and overlights, and two cross mullion/transom windows with small panes. The first floor of this wing features a loading door, two 2-light casements, and a painted wooden board displaying the Edgcumbe coat of arms. The front end of the wing mirrors the inner side’s configuration. The wing to the right has a doorway with an overlight and three similar casements, all with splayed stone heads. At the first floor, there are two 3-light and two 2-light casements, and the front end mirrors the left wing.
Attached to the right is a two-storey block, formerly used as grooms’ accommodation. This block has a central flat-roofed porch with panelled double doors and a 4-light window to the right. The first floor features a 2-light casement and a blind window.
The right side of the building has two storeys and a basement, with seven windows at the second floor; these are varied casements with splayed heads and keystones. A panelled door is located in the second bay from the right. The left side includes workshops, including a smithy, and a block with a gabled roof, a gabled dormer, two window openings, and a door, all with brick segmental heads. Steps lead up to a loading door under the eaves of the main range, and a further single-storey workshop runs along the entire length of the left side, featuring two doors and a wide window with vertical lights.
The rear of the building has irregularly spaced casement windows and a single-storey addition to the centre. A hipped roof extends over the left end, featuring two windows and a rear lateral stack. There are two doors. The interior of the building has not been inspected.
