Description
The monument to James Gough is a chest tomb located in the churchyard about 15 metres south of the chancel wall of the Church of St Mary. It dates from the late 17th century and is made of sandstone. The tomb features a flat top with a moulded edge and a frieze decorated with guilloche or palmette designs. On the east side, there is a high relief panel with an armorial bearing, while the west side displays drapes. The north and south panels each contain a central elongated ellipse with divided panels at the top and bottom, surrounded by heavily enriched moulded surrounds. The base of the tomb is sunk, and the south panel was noted to be displaced at the time of survey in November 1983. This monument commemorates James Gough of Pastershill, who died in 1691, and is recognized as a fine example of late 17th-century memorial architecture.
