Description

This is a detached dwelling, now converted into apartments, dating to the late 18th century and the 19th century. The house is mostly rendered, but the street frontage is painted squared and coursed sandstone with a Welsh slate hipped roof. The original structure is a simple hipped block with a stairwell extension to the left. An early 19th-century parallel range was added to the right, along with extensions to the rear. The street-facing elevation is three storeys and one window wide. It features a 20th-century casement window above a two-storey canted bay with 19th-century four-pane sashes. A blocked arched doorway is located to the left, and to the right is a two-storey addition with two replacement twelve-pane sashes on each floor. To the left of the three-storey block is a sandstone boundary wall approximately 2.5 metres high, rising to around 3 metres where it joins the front. There is a pair of slender sandstone gate piers, each made from a single piece of stone and topped with pyramidal caps, along with late 20th-century gates. The north-facing return facade includes two 19th-century sixteen-pane sashes above a replacement three-light ten:twelve:ten sash window. A stone arched opening leads to a cellar. A 19th-century sixteen-pane sash window is set back to the right, above a 19th-century panelled door with Gothic tracery in the upper glazed lights, sheltered by an umbrella hood on trellis supports. A single-storey extension is situated to the right. The interior was not inspected, but the property has been significantly altered during its conversion to apartments. The property occupies a key position in The Square and is located immediately south of The Castle.
