Description
Old Council Offices and former fire station, built around 1900. The building is now a religious centre. Constructed from rock-faced granite rubble with dressed granite details and a slate roof, it forms a large rectangular block on a corner site. The design is in a Renaissance style. It is two storeys high, with an angled corner and asymmetrical facades to both Trevenson Street and Cross Street. It has a chamfered plinth and moulded cornices to both floors.
The eight-bay facade to Trevenson Street has the main entrance in the third bay; this section is constructed of ashlar and projects slightly, featuring a wide, segmental-headed doorway with Renaissance-style diamond-panelled doors. The doorway is framed by stout, Ionic, pedestalled columns of polished granite carrying an open pediment, with an elaborate shaped gablet above containing a circular window (oeil-de-boeuf), and flanked by panelled chimney stacks. The 1st, 5th, and 8th bays also project slightly and are finished with shaped gablets. The 6th and 7th bays contain former fire-engine doorways, now glazed, and the 8th has a doorway with a pediment above. Otherwise, the facade has large cross-windows with glazing bars on both floors. Above the roof ridge, in line with the main doorway, rises an octagonal fleche with arcading.
The two-bay facade to Cross Street is in matching style, with a two-light window projected on corbels at first floor level of the second bay. The interior was not inspected.
