Description
The Wesley Memorial Institute is a Wesleyan Institute built in 1887. It features a granite ashlar front and stucco with stucco detail on the right-hand return. The roof is made of dry Delabole slate with red crested clay ridge tiles, and there are rendered end stacks topped with an entablature. A cast-iron ogee gutter runs over widely-spaced modillions on the fascia board. The building is presumed to have a large room at the front with an entrance hall leading to a stair hall on the right.
It stands two storeys high and has a regular range of six windows, with segmental arches on the first floor and round arches on the ground floor. The original windows are four-pane horned sashes. To the right, there is a doorway with a two-pane fanlight above a panelled door. The front features a plinth, an impost string, keyblocks, and a mid-floor entablature with an inscription that reads: "SMITH WESLEYAN MEMORIAL INSTITUTE 1887."
The right-hand return has a two-to-one window arrangement with quoin strips and architectural details similar to the front, but in stucco. The first two bays are under a gable as a pediment, and the right-hand bay, which is the side wall of the rear wing, has a mid-floor stair window with an impost string. The interior has not been inspected.
This unique Methodist Institute holds significant group value with the Wesleyan chapel, now known as Camborne Methodist Church. It is important as part of the later 19th-century development and has historical interest as a Methodist educational facility for adults following the 1870 Education Act, as well as being a memorial to the notable Methodist educationalist George Smith.
