Description

Kelman Memorial Church, built in 1895 with late 20th century additions and alterations, is a single-storey, five-bay church featuring an engaged square-plan tower on the northwest side. The exterior is constructed from tooled coursed grey granite, laid in Aberdeen bond on the north, east, and west sides, with finely finished margins. The base course is rough-faced, and the building includes projecting cills, round-arched openings, contrasting light grey long and short dressings, and roll-moulded reveals with hoodmoulds that have decorative drip stones on the south elevation.

The south elevation is symmetrical and gabled, with a finely finished granite doorway at the center of the ground floor. This doorway is advanced and features an elaborate architrave that is battered at the base, leading to a two-leaf boarded timber door accessed by four stone steps with long strapwork hinges. Flanking the doorway are windows on the left, each with an inset circular panel of polished pink granite above, reading "1843" on the left and "1894" on the right. A decorative rose window with a hoodmould is centered in the gablehead above the doorway, topped with a stone finial. There is a window in each of the slightly recessed outer bays of the aisles.

The east elevation is asymmetrical with seven bays, featuring five buttressed bays on the left, a small window in the outer left bay, and regular fenestration in the remainder. There are two gabled bays on the outer right, each with a window.

The north elevation was not seen in 1999.

The west elevation is also asymmetrical with seven bays, five buttressed bays on the right, a small window in the outer right bay, and regular fenestration in the remainder. An engaged square-plan three-stage tower is located in the flanking bay to the left. The ground floor of the first stage is obscured by a modern addition, and there is a round-arched former doorway on the right return, now glazed. The second stage features windows centered with a hoodmould on the south side, louvred bipartite windows, a crenellated parapet on corbel stones, and a pyramidal roof with a weathervane at the apex. The flanking bays on the outer right side were not seen in 2000.

The church predominantly features rectangular-pane coloured leaded glass with inset decorative panels. The roof is covered with grey slate and has lead ridges, along with regularly placed cast-iron ventilators. The stone skews are coped and have decorative skewputts, and the rainwater goods are made of cast iron.

The boundary walls are constructed from granite rubble with pointed coping.
