Description
The Trevithick Memorial Statue, located on the pavement in front of the library in Camborne, is a Grade II listed memorial dedicated to the engineer Richard Trevithick (1771-1833). It was created in 1928 by L.S. Merrifield. The statue features a white granite pedestal with bronze plaques and a gilded bronze statue. The pedestal is square in shape and has a shallow step and a deep plain base. It is topped with a tall pedestal that has a moulded plinth and cap, supporting a life-size statue of Trevithick.
Each side of the plinth includes a small bronze relief plaque. The plaque on the back shows a sailing ship and is inscribed with the words: "RICHARD TREVITHICK INVENTOR OF THE LOCOMOTIVE BORN 1771 DIED 1833." The other plaques depict kneeling female figures representing the applications of steam power, with inscriptions identifying them: the front plaque shows a Cornish boiler, the left side features the Merthyr Tydfil Locomotive, and the right side displays an iron Steam and Sail Ship. The statue itself depicts Trevithick in a forward-striding pose, holding a pair of dividers in his raised right hand and cradling a model of a steam locomotive in his left arm. The base of the statue is inscribed with "L.S. Merrifield" and "1928."
