Description
Camborne Youth Centre and Primary Resources Centre is a former Board School, dating from 1893, constructed in a Free Gothic style. The building is of snecked rock-faced sandstone with granite quoins and dressings, topped by a slate roof. It has an irregular plan with an L-shaped rear wing creating a courtyard behind the main block. The elevation is asymmetrical overall, with a triangular emphasis towards the central three-bay gable. This prominent section is wider and features a two-storey canted bay of ashlar, with pinnacled buttresses at ground level. It has a basket-arched and chamfered surround to a window with three cusped lights over a cross-window. Above, three-stage mullion-and-transom windows are situated on the first floor, topped by a deep embattled parapet. Flanking this are large transomed three-light windows at ground floor and cross-windows at first floor, all with sill-bands, quoined surrounds and shallow, triangular-headed lintels. The gable has kneelers, square offsets, and an apex finial. A datestone bearing “CAMBORNE BOARD SCHOOL 1893” is set between the offsets, with a small stepped triple lancet window above. The ground floor of each wing has two cross-windows, with ventilators inserted in the upper lights of those on the right. The first floor windows on each wing reflect the triangular pattern of the centre, incorporating small single-light windows either side of a tall, three-stage transomed window that rises into a gablet matching the principal gable. The roof has cockscomb ridge tiles (some are missing) and a corniced chimney at the left gable. Side walls feature large Venetian-style mullion-and-transom windows. A single-storey addition to the rear corner of the rear wing is not of particular architectural interest.
