Description

St Clair is a house, now functioning as a rest home, built in the mid-19th century. It features a stucco exterior, likely over rubble, and a slate roof. The building has a long double-depth plan and stands two storeys high, with a symmetrical facade consisting of one central bay and three bays on either side. The central section projects slightly forward and is adorned with panelled pilasters that have foliated capitals.

The main entrance is framed by a rectangular porch that is accessed by two steps. This porch includes small matching pilasters on either side of the door and narrow side windows, topped with a moulded entablature that projects over the door, and a dentilled cornice. The door itself has two round-headed lights with low panels beneath and an overlight above, while the side windows are styled similarly, each featuring a decorative wreath above. All windows in the building are four-pane sashes with moulded architraves decorated with egg-and-dart motifs. The windows flanking the door have cornices supported by consoles, and those in the first and fifth bays are set within prominent two-storey canted bays that also have mid-level cornices.

The roof has a projecting eaves cornice and is hipped, with decorative iron finials above the canted bays. There are chimneys located behind the ridge of the first bay and on its left side wall. At the rear, there is a canted bay window and a stair window featuring intersecting tracery, along with a modern sun lounge that is not of special interest.

Inside, the property boasts a doglegged staircase with an open string, scrolled brackets, slender turned balusters, and a mahogany handrail with a wreathed curtail.
